Music: Take Me To Church

My lover’s got humour
She’s the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody’s disapproval
I should’ve worshipped her sooner

If the heavens ever did speak
She’s the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday’s getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week

“We were born sick,” you heard them say it

My church offers no absolutes
She tells me, “Worship in the bedroom.”
The only heaven I’ll be sent to
Is when I’m alone with you

I was born sick
But I love it
Command me to be well
Aaay. Amen. Amen. Amen.

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

If I’m a pagan of the good times
My lover’s the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice

Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That’s a fine-looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We’ve a lot of starving faithful

That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

No Masters or Kings
When the Ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin

In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
Ooh oh. Amen. Amen. Amen.

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

Notes: Liar

DSCF1124Let’s ask ourselves these questions. Do you put heavy make-up to cover your pimple or skin imperfection? Do you need to purchase brand-name products? Do you max out your credit card to purchase fancy things that you cannot afford it? Do you use a photo filter or photoshop before you upload your photo online? Do you work in a company only for a monthly pay-cheque? Do you cheat on your lover or partner and stay in a relationship even you are no longer happy? Do you know that all of those are the form of lie and there are just many more forms of lies out there?

Well, the individual is not the only liar in our society. The governments lie, the companies lie, the religious institutions lie, the politicians lie, the religious leaders lie, the public figures lie and almost all the citizens lie. Eventually, almost all of us are liars.

However, have you ever asked yourself why you need to lie? I believe that we begin to lie because our society often tells us that we are not good enough as individuals. They say “You are not good enough because of your skin colour”;  “You are not good enough because of your ethnicity background”; “You are not good enough because of your weight”; “You are not good enough because of your job”. And you are just not good in so many ways.

Their judgment makes us feeling insecure; their judgment makes us to not accept yourself, and their judgment makes us feel to have the need to fulfil their demand/ requirements. The worse, their judgment makes you stop loving yourself unconditionally.  Ultimately, you have the need to lie. We do it consciously or unconsciously, to other people as well as to ourselves. As a result, we become liars.

We do not know anymore whether we need to keep our mouth shut and tell the truth or we just need to lie. In the end, lying seems to be much easier than being honest and truthful; being perfect seems to be more acceptable than being imperfect and that is what our society wants from us… to be perfect! Hence, we lie. Correct me if I was wrong!

Notes: God and Religion

SONY DSCThere is nothing new under the sun, so I write the same issue again.

The concept of belief and religion has always been fascinating to me. The dynamic of our daily life leads me to wonder why religion has divided and categorised us as a human being and place us into a different place.

When I was a kid, I often wondered why neighbour chose to be Islam, and my family decided to be Catholic? Why is a friend of mine Hindu? Is it true that particular religion better than others? Is it true if one convert from one religion to other religion, would commit sin?

And when I was a teenager, I asked myself what religion is? Who created religion in the first place? Do we have to have a religion? What about being an atheist? Will we go to hell if we don’t believe in God? Do heaven and hell even exist?

I had nowhere to go find those answer back at that time. I did not know what kind of book I should read to find the answer. There was no way that I could find the answer at school nor in the family. It is because I am living in a society where everyone has been tied to a specific religion since the second we were born.

But as I entered university, I started to understand that religion is just a product of social construction. Nothing less, nothing more. And I do agree with that. However, I always do believe that our existence happens because of God. I refused to understand all the scientific argument about our life because it is just too complicated to understand.

And yes, I do believe with the existence of God. God is the most straightforward answer to our life existence. Having said that, one can always believe in God without being tied to a particular religion. Yet, my faith in God is not strong. It comes and goes.

For me, religion is a set of concept about the way we live our lives and the things that we consider essential. It is a guide for us to live our life accordingly. It talks about kindness. It talks about love. It talks about injustice. It also talks about wickedness. Religion is a set of a reminder of how we should do good while we live our lives. That’s all.

In these last four years, I have been learning about Christianity. Why? It is because I want to search and find the balance between mind, body and soul.

Yet,  having myself learning about Christianity, I still do not consider myself as a Christian or Catholic or even a religious person. I still have no interest to engage in church activity. But I go to Sunday service, I carry prayer pocketbook, and I have a great interest in reading the bible to understand about Christianity and religion. And ay… I even had a considerable tattoo cross on my back.

As I completed reading the old testament and new testament,  I learnt that bible content a set of beautiful teaching on how we should treat each other as human beings, an excellent reminder on how we should live our lives as part of the community.  Bible is a book of wisdom and love.

A few days ago, someone asked me why does one have to go to church to know about the concept of being kind to others? So I answered “It is because we, human being, are arrogant to always feel knowing everything; while sometimes we forget and go astray. It is always good to have a reminder.

But some event of life showed me another side of the coin. It showed that many people tie themselves into religion because they actually feel insecure about the reality of life. They seek comfort within the bible and look for a bible verse, which comforts him or her.

I do the same. I seek for comfort words when I am facing difficulty, which I could not find it from other people. I usually ask from either book -including bible- or music.

Yet, they quote a bible verse bit by bit without having a full of understanding of it. Later, they use it to judge others and justify their own action. Why? Because they believe that God would always forgive and save us.

You see …. one might read the bible daily. One might know how to preach about it also. One might engage in some church activity. Even, there is no Sunday service that one is going to miss as much as possible.

Yet, what’s the point of being very religious and have a strong faith in God but have no idea to implement those religious teaching? It just talks the talk? But in the end, implementing spiritual value is our own choice, we would reap what we sow.

As I learnt, I always feel good when I do good; I still feel restless when I do wrong to others. It has nothing to do with religion.

Notes: Back to Jakarta Baby

Bali story is over for the moment. I am back to Jakarta and back to real life where I have to deal with crazy traffic again. But what can I do? I gotta make some cash so I can get some more shoes no? Ooops!

Despite the fact I am complaining about Jakarta’s traffic, I would say that it is fun to be back to Jakarta because I am back to cover some stories again. I would meet new people again, I would get some new informations and I would write more stories again. Yay!

Kabut Jihad book launching in Hotel Borobudur, Jakarta [2012: Oktofani]

Khairul Ghazali, the author of Kabut Jihad, launched his 50th book in Jakarta [2012: Oktofani]

Today I attended a book launching, which was written by an Islamic fundamentalism figure, who was accused to involve in 2010 bank robbery at CIMB Niaga branch in Medan. It was very interesting because it was attended by many Islamic fundamentalism figures, Islamic scholars and also government officers.

Umar Patek, an accused bombmaker in the 2002 Bali attacks, was speaking to reporters in West Jakarta District Court [2012: Oktofani]

While tomorrow (Thursday), I would attend a Umar Patek’s verdict hearing. I really have to wake up early and leave early so I can get a front seat in the court room in West Jakarta District Court. It will be fun!

FYI, Umar Patek, 45, is accused of assembling explosives for twin suicide bombings on a bar and a nightclub in Bali that killed 202 people, and church attacks in Jakarta on Christmas Eve in 2000 that killed 19.

Anyway, I got a little problem here. I have been spending a week writing fiction and now I have to switch my brain to write news again. I found it super hard…. but what can I do? Little mamma needs to make some money.

And yay! I can go back to gym again… it has been a week that I did not work out at the gym.

Notes: T.I and “Our Father”

Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr., better known by his stage name T.I., is an American hip hop recording artist and music producer

Do you know T.I? Do you like T.I music? I do! I love T.I music and songs!

Since I like T.I, I was hunting for T.I CD when I was in Canada last Christmas. I was so glad that I could find several of his old album [well I could only find couple of his album] that I could not find in Indonesia. I actually like T.I just in the last one year when I heard his song featuring Christina Aguilera “Castle Wall”.

As I love music so much, my hubby told me that Canada has so many good CD shop where I can find any kind of old album, which I might not be able to find in Indonesia. So, I went to HMV in Ottawa and I felt like that I found a heaven. There were just so many CDs and I wanted to get so many of them, especially CDs which are not available in Indonesia anymore. On the top of that, it was Christmas and they had Christmas sale! Even though they had a Christmas sale, the price is actually so much more expensive than the price in Indonesia. Well I should not be so surprissed!

Ooo geez… I was going nuts with the CD shopping, I forgot that CD would add more weight and I did not want to throw the box when I went back to Indonesia. My hubby already also reminded me that I should not get a lot of thing because if I have over weight luggage [you know that women love shopping], he would ask me to leave some stuff behind, which is BIG NO NO!

Anyhow….From my CD hunting in Canada, I bought several CDs of 50Cent, Akon, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Jill Scott, Angie Stone  and also  T.I.  Unfortunately , I only found couple of T.I album which are Urban Legend [2004] and No Mercy [2010], the rest I could not find it even when I looked for it in Halifax and Toronto.

…. Talking about one of T.I track from Urban Legend album, Praying For Help is one of my favorite T.I track from his album. It just sounds WOW when he opened his song with a Our Father Prayer.

Our Father, who are in heaven. Hollowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us for our trespasses. As we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For thou is the kingdom, the power, and the glory. For ever, and ever

Matthew 6: 9 – 13

Honestly I did not remember Our Father prayer until I listened to Praying For Help song over and over again. I used to think that Our Father prayer was just an ordinary prayer and was not that powerful until I listened to this song especially whenever I said the last couple of line “For thou [thine] is the kingdom, the power and the glory , forever and ever. Amen!”

Since then, Our Father prayer become my favorite prayer because whenever I say the prayer in the church, I just feel so peaceful as if I am being touch by Holy Spirit. I sound so religious and spiritual ey…? But seriously, that is what I feel! Even sometimes, it makes me crying when I say this prayer.

To be honest, I used to not be a religious person. I used to always have faith in myself and believe that I can do and get whatever things  I want in life without the-so-called God’s help [that is what I used to think about God before]. But things changed, they do not stay the life. Life circumstance has changed my view and belief, you can read my previous blog “It’s Awkward When G.O.D Shows Up“. Even though, I am changing to have a belief system and engaged with one belief system… it does not mean that I am religious person.

If I used to drink so much alcohol to get rid of the problem in my life, I have learned that makes peace with myself by coming to God and praying to God is better than getting super drunk. I am not a religious person, I drink occasionally whenever I go out but it is not mean to run away or escape from problem because it will not solve any problem.

I believe that everyone has their own way to make a peace with themselves whenever they have a problem in this life.

Cheers,
